How Is PCR Relevant Today?
Polymerase Chain Reaction, or PCR, is used to amplify DNA and synthesize new strands of DNA from a template strand of DNA. PCR is used around the world in both research and industrial laboratories. This revolutionary method has allowed rapid genetic testing and analysis, drug development, forensics applications, and many more important uses.
PCR is fast and relatively inexpensive, allowing for small samples to yield significant copies of DNA. The reaction is done in a thermocycler, a device that changes the reaction temperature to allow the DNA to denature and synthesize alternately.
PCR was notably used for mapping purpose for the Human Genome Project. PCR is also greatly important in detecting bacteria or viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID.
PCR and COVID
PCR has gained global attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is due to the molecular tests called RT-PCR tests. RT-PCR tests are used to detect the virus’s genetic material. This is a diagnostic test using a sample obtained either via nasal or throat swabs, most commonly, or saliva.
The advantage of the RT-PCR test is that it typically yields same-day results for some locations (longer for some others), and is highly accurate. This saves time, and prevents a need for repetition. Given COVID-19’s highly contagious nature, time is of the essence to diagnose, and therefore ensure someone infected by the novel coronavirus can quarantine quickly and properly. The RT-PCR is not used, however, to discern whether a person has had coronavirus infection in the past.
